What can a town refund?
N.J.S.A. 2C:58-4(c) sets a $200 application fee. For an application through a municipal police chief, the statute allocates $150 to the municipality and $50 to the State.
Local relief concerns the municipal portion. Some towns collect the fee first, then reimburse eligible applicants. Training, fingerprints, portal charges, and other fees are separate. Confirm current charges with the issuing authority.

- Check your municipality. Review its official resolution or police guidance and the eligibility dates.
- Confirm the local process. Ask the clerk, finance department, or firearms unit which form and proof of payment are required.
- Keep your documents. Retain your receipt and application confirmation. Submit a refund request only through the municipality’s official process.
